With undeniably catchy and uplifting melodies, Alexissings alongside instruments gentle and comforting, andwith twenty-five tracks ranging from the fleetingforty-six seconds to two minutes thirty-four seconds, eachsong seems a snapshot, creating a jigsaw of a whole worldof her very own, bright and beautiful.
The simplicity of the different elements: guitar, drums,melodica and glockenspiel amongst other instruments,combined, display a real deftness and dexterity insongcraft through the clever use of double-tracked vocalsand multi-harmonies, layering of instruments andwell-timed breakdowns: songs complete and in miniature. Away could be a retrospective of the classic pop song, butwith Alexis' simple and personal delivery and use of themore naive sounding instruments such as the recorder andeven whistling, it carves a direct path to the heart,direct and true. With production as if Alexis is singingsitting right next to you, playing her instruments in yourroom, it's difficult not to feel that she is a friendconfiding in you.
And yet with all these beautiful melodies and warm vocals,there is still a sense of an adult's complex and at times,problematic world behind it. It just seems that theimperfections are being accepted, and further than that,celebrated.
The 4 Bonjour Parties remix of 'Set Of Wheels' at the tailof the album has an approach simultaneously subtle, yetbold and separate from the original. Taking a song, simplein instrumentation, and incredibly strong on melody, 4Bonjour Parties turn it into a dynamic pop song, eachsection more defined. While the strength of the originalis that it fades away as the momentum gathers, leavingspace for the imagination of the listener to pick up whereAlexis leaves off, the remix's definite beats andprogressive movement make the song seem whole.
As a debut release on Lost In Found records, The Motifs has aconfidently distinctive and recognisable sound. Alexis'dreamy trademark ooh-ooh-oohs pepper the vocals along withclear yet imagination-inspiring words. Playing solos whichmirror the vocal melody, could sound old-fashioned, butwith Alexis' subtle delivery and choice of instrument, shetakes a traditional element and makes it sound new andbright. Which is what can really be said for the songs.The Motifs reinvents the wheel with renewed vigour,simplicity and beauty.
心を掴んで離さない、勇気付けてくれるようなメロディーを、アレクシスは楽曲を通して歌い、耳を傾ける人々を優しく包み込む。46秒〜2分34秒間の多様な全25曲は、それぞれがあたかもスナップショットのようで、等身大の彼女の世界観を構成するジグソーパズルのようでもあり、鮮明で美しい。
異なる要素が各々持つ飾り気のない純朴さ・・・ギター、ドラムス、メロディカ、グロッケンの音色がその他の楽器と組み合わされ、楽曲へと創り上げられていくその手法は、実に器用で巧い。効果的なダブルトラックのヴォーカルと、重ねられたコーラスワーク。
楽器のオーケストレーションと、小気味いいブレイク。全ての楽曲は完成されており、細密画のようだ。"Away" は、ともすればポップソングの王道への回顧主義に走りがちだととられるかもしれないが、アレクシス自身の個人的な想いと、リコーダーや口笛のような繊細な音色とを用いる事によって、人々の心にダイレクトに誠実に届くだろう。まるでアレクシス本人がすぐ隣に座って歌っているかのような、そんな作品に仕上がっており、これを聴く貴方は、彼女の事を心の許せる大切な親友のように感じずにはいられないだろう。
また、美しいメロディと温かいヴォーカルで満たされていながらも、大人としての人生の難しさや、問題を抱える世界の存在をも時折その背後に感じさせる。不完全であるということが当然のように受け入れられており、称賛すらされているかのようでもある。
アルバムのラストを飾る、4 bonjour's partiesによる“Set Of Wheels”のリミックスでは、微細であると同時に大胆に原曲を作り変えるアプローチがされている。歌を楽器の一つとしてシンプルに扱うことでメロディーが浮かび上がり、ダイナミックなポップソングに生まれ変わって、各々のパートも際立っている。オリジナルヴァージョンは、曲に勢いが出始めた頃にフェードアウトしてしまい、アレクシスが曲を終えようとする箇所をリスナーが想像する余韻が残されているが、このリミックスヴァージョンの強いビートとプログレッシブな変化は、楽曲そのものを完成へと導いているようである。
Lost In Foundレーベル初のリリースとなる本作で、The Motifsはそれにふさわしい、信頼のおけるサウンドを聴かせてくれる。トレードマークとも言えるドリーミーな"ooh-ooh"コーラスの間に、明確でありながらも想像力をかき立てる言葉が、彼女の歌声に乗せて散りばめられている。ヴォーカルのメロディーをなぞるギターソロはレトロな手法に聞こえるが、繊細な歌い回しと楽器選択により、伝統的な要素を取り込みつつも新鮮に響くサウンドを見事に創り出している。この事は楽曲というものを語るにあたって本当に重要な要素である。 The Motifsは、楽曲の持つ力についてあらためて気付かせてくれる・・・取り戻す活力や、飾らない純朴さや、それ自身の美しさについて。
